Reviews for Life's Experience...

Reviewer: Nicole Getridge, Author of Shielded Heart

Publisher: Publish America

In Latrice William’s first novel, Life’s Experience, she tells the heart wrenching story of Nicole Jackson, who goes through what every women at one point in her life fears: teen pregnancy.

Latrice does a marvelous job at depicting this young girls life. You will however want to strangle her at times, but the story will truly captivate you. And you will however be surprised at who this book is truly about.

It is this reviewers opinion that Latrice Williams has written a novel about the love of family and the hard ships that we all face during our journey in life. I would keep an eye out for future works by this very talented first time author.

Life's Experience -- A Triumph of the Human Spirit

"Doll baby" was the nickname for Chamaiya Jackson, Maiya for short. Little Maiya is born into circumstances that would make a lot of people stop and pause. She's born to an unwed fifteen year old mother, who, frankly, is a baby herself, not ready for motherhood and who allows her mother to take care of the little "doll baby." She even shows jealousy of her own child.

Once little Maiya begins school, her mother, Nicole (who has since married Maiya's father, Joe) becomes pregnant again. These circumstances are all too common, and usually in these circumstances, bad things happen. Very bad things happen. Nicole's husband, Joe, is abusive and violent. Nicole herself eventually leaves the children. Worse, the one male who should be a positive in this negative environment, her uncle James, is sexually abusing his own little niece -- without regard to her feelings. Nicole then returns to the family, but to little Chamaiya, she is a stranger.

Fortunately for Maiya, she has a beacon of light in this bleak world -- her grandmother, known simply as Mama. She also has two more things going for her: a singing voice like an angel, and an unshakable inner strength. The fabric that runs through this entire novel is a faith and a belief in God.

Latrice Williams has a way of drawing the reader into the story. She makes the reader care for the characters and wanting to know what happens to them. However, I kept wondering what happened to Nicole. She simply -- disappeared, as if she were never there. To her, it's almost as if "doll-baby" never even existed. The book was 82 pages. I didn't want it to end!

Review by Fallon Lak April 28, 2004 Author of Torn Apart. *****

The author takes you into a life that so many have experienced, yet so many of us can’t imagine. Latrice Williams helps us share in unthinkable moments with Maiya. A young girl that stands against the thunder storms of life with her head up and pushes herself for and to a better life.  My heart pounded with sorrow and happiness with each new event of her life.

The author has presented a life story in an unusual surrounding. Life’s experience touches your soul, your heart. It will keep you reading until the last page, with a fascinating ending.

Life’s experience is must read, and the word of courage, strength, and hope should be passed to others.

I anxiously await Latrice Williams’ next novel.

Life’s Experience I have had the opportunity to read a wonderful woman’s work called Life’s Experience. Ms. Williams’ strong relationship with God is an inspiration to us all. As a reviewer I normally do not review works of these type, but I feel honored to have a chance to read her story. Although, there are gaps in her storytelling, her message rings loud and clear. Do not allow the passages on abuse to cause you to put this book down. She is very careful not to waste time on the abuse, but to allow the reader enough description so that they may have a chance to understand her tragedy. I believe her message is a message for every woman - every Human being. Latrice Williams, I hope to read more from you in the future. God Bless you!
